Lactation Consultants that hold the credential IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) have had extensive training and experience before passing an international examination.  They then have to maintain their credential through additional education.  An IBCLC is a credential to trust, they are the most skilled and knowledgeable in their field.  You can use this website to find a Lactation Consultant in your area, and also search for someone to help you with a suspected tongue-tie.

The Infant Risk Center is based in Texas, and was opened by the author of the book “Medications and Mothers Milk”, Thomas W. Hale RPh, PhD.  While the book is only updated every other year, the Center provides accurate, current information on a huge number of drugs that you may need to take.  There are very few drugs that are not compatible with breastfeeding, and sometimes there are alternative drugs that you can take and continue to breastfeed.  The Infant Risk Center will also take into account all the drugs you are taking and makes sure that all the benefits and risks are taken into consideration.  I always keep a copy of the book in my house, and there is now a phone app if you search Infant Risk Center.

  • Forums

There are numerous parenting forums out there today, and most of them have a breastfeeding thread.  Some are better than others.  You should always remember that advice given on the majority of these forums is coming from breastfeeding mothers without any formal training, but in a lot of cases just knowing that there are people out there going through the same things can be reassuring.  I would recommend that you find a forum that feels right for you.  If you intend to breastfeed until your child decides to stop, you may not get the support you need from a forum you might choose if you intend to breastfeed for only 3 months.

Some forums that I have found:

You may also want to look for yahoo groups that suit your interests.  When searching you can also search for “natural parenting” or “attachment parenting” groups.

Local Breastfeeding Resources (Sevenoaks/Tonbridge, Kent)

  • Sevenoaks & Tonbridge NCT

This local NCT chapter is very busy providing great services and events for local families.  If you have the money to spare, it is definitely worth attending one of their antenatal class series, many women stay friends for a long time after meeting and bonding at these classes.  There are also local volunteers called parent links that welcome all new members, and organise local events such as coffee mornings or playdates.  Nearly new sales are held in three locations twice every year to raise money for NCT, and are a great opportunity for you to pick up a bargain for the new baby or clear space in your closets and make some money.  The NCT also provides the following services for breastfeeding women.

My Favourite Resources (Sevenoaks/Tonbridge, Kent)

Fabulous company to work with, they installed our solar panels, and they are really great and patient with inquisitive kids asking “What are you doing?” 50 times a day.

If you want to get out and exercising and you don’t want to leave the baby, take them along to Holly Bush park and have fun exercising with baby.

If you are looking for additional support during your delivery and beyond, a doula can be an invaluable resource.

If you have seen my flyers or business cards you will understand why I love the work that Hannah has done for me, and you don’t pay shipping if you collect from the store.

Sam runs free taster sessions at the new SureStart Centre in Dunton Green as well as regular classes in Riverhead, Edenbridge and Wetserham.
